Xtreme: jessica, how are you doing?
jessica: I’m doing really well!
Xtreme: Do you know that this is the fourth interview we’ve done together?
jessica: You know, when we set this up, I didn’t know it was four, but I absolutely remembered the others! That’s so cool.
Xtreme: It has been a really long time, though. Last time we spoke was I believe literally a day or two before you were about to host the AVN Awards for your first time.
jessica: Oh, wow! I don’t even know if I could tell you everything that’s happened since then. A lot of new movies have come out, I am hosting a radio show on Sirius/XM 102 called In Bed with jessica drake, I have a podcast on iTunes called the STFU Show, and about a year and a half ago I began creating a line of instructional DVDs called jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex!
Xtreme: So you really are super busy! How did these all come about, especially the podcast and the radio show? Were they your idea, or were you approached to do them?
jessica: As far as the radio show goes, I’ve done a lot of work for Playboy during my career, like hosting TV shows and radio shows, and they wanted me to do my own show five days a week. I can’t adhere to that type of schedule because I’m really just too busy, but in the meantime we decided that I’d still do a show that’s live every Tuesday. So that was a mutual thing. I really wanted a live show on satellite radio. As far as the podcast goes, that’s my way of still getting out there into the broadcast world, but doing it more under my terms. It’s a bit more flexible being that I’m my own boss for the podcast. I have a studio at my house, and I just went to a twice-weekly format. I’m literally headed to my house to do a podcast as we speak! I try to put one up every Sunday and Monday, and they run about an hour long, and it’s free, and our subscribers can download them and listen any time they want.
Xtreme: That’s really exciting.
jessica: Thank you! But the instructionals are my biggest project that I have happening right now. The way they came about was really progressive. I was doing a lot of store signings, public appearances and conventions for Wicked, and I found that the demographic was beginning to shift. Originally we had mostly guys coming out to see us, and I’d look up from my signing table at an adult store and there would be a huge line of guys waiting for autographs, but every once in a while we’d get a woman. A wife, a girlfriend, who usually looked uncomfortable, didn’t want to be there but was there for her guy. About three or four years ago, that started changing and I think a lot of that had to do with the attitude of these higher-end boutique stores that women felt more comfortable shopping in. So we had a lot more women coming out, and I always try to talk to people in that line since they’ve waited for so long, to give them a piece of me, some personal attention, and in doing that they began to ask me questions. Sex advice questions, relationships, dating, you name it. One day a woman came up to me and said, “I think there’s something wrong with me because I can’t do it like you.” I didn’t know what she meant and I was so concerned! And she said, “I want to be great for my husband, but I can’t do what you guys do on camera.” I felt so bad and I told her that what she was seeing was movie magic without all the preparation that we do, and that there was nothing wrong with her, and she asked if there was a DVD that had all of that information on it. And I said, “Not yet, but there will be!” That sort of gave me the push I was looking for. I’d long since considered doing educationals or some type of talk show or something like that, because I’m currently in school to become a certified sex coach, and part of our curriculum was to go back and watch these instructionals and to hear lectures and to really get into what was available to people to enrich their sex lives, and I really saw an opportunity for me, so I went with it. And they won Best Instructional at AVN!
Xtreme: Within the series, is it set up so one DVD is about anal and one is about oral and so on?
jessica: Yes. They’re all themed and a lot of research, no pun intended, goes into each one, and I’ve opted to not perform in them but I do narrate them, I direct them, create, write, research them, all that good stuff.
Xtreme: You mentioned that the shift in the audience can be attributed to the atmosphere around it and I think probably also things like the mainstream appearance of shows like Pornucopia and Cathouse on HBO, but having witnessed your feature performances firsthand, you’re very relatable to your female audience when they see you face to face. How would you describe that appeal?
jessica: I think a lot of women are intimidated by porn, but they shouldn’t be. I know a lot of these movies feature a lot of really beautiful people but there’s something for everyone in our business. Whether you like young, old, fat, skinny, in-between, short, tall, any eye color, any skin color, there’s really something for everyone, and I like teaching women about that. We’re always the same at the end of the day, and when I’m giving my seminars, I’ll tell women things about myself that I don’t particularly like. We all have those things! So I just like showing women what a positive experience watching movies can really be, and I have a lot of life experience with it by now, and since I’ve been going to school I have some textbook experience too, and I just want to share it.
Xtreme: Here’s something you may not know about. I always do a little web surfing in preparation for my interviews and I stumbled upon a bit of a hidden gem about you! There are entire collections of photos of your feet online!
jessica: [bursts out laughing] You know, I don’t know exactly where they are, but I can tell you that I’m not particularly surprised. I did not know that.
Xtreme: But you’ve probably heard weirder things.
jessica: Definitely. [laughs]
Xtreme: I guess while we’re on the subject, do you like foot play?
jessica: Oh, definitely! And I think that’s something I wasn’t really too in touch with until I had people emailing me requests, and once I considered it and started indulging the requests I became really interested. I love expensive shoes, and although I’m not trying to get anyone to buy them for me, I go all out about once a year, which, coincidentally, is around the same time as AVN, and I buy myself a ridiculously expensive pair of shoes as sort of a reward for my hard work all year and I take pictures in them.
Xtreme: Good for you! Do you have any other fetishes?
jessica: Well, before it was cool or I knew what I was doing, I was really into rough sex. In the past couple of years I’ve been able to sort of both refine and define what it is that I like, but I just really like really aggressive, rough sex, burglar fantasies, intruder fantasies, stuff like that. Let me emphasize that these are fantasies! I think part of the reason I’m so into this is because I’m type-A and a control freak, and every day I’m so focused on my business, so when I have sex like that and I’m being dominated, I have no other choice but to surrender. The second I lose myself in sex is utopia for me. So my biggest fetish is rough sex, and secondary to that is role playing. Then a good foot fetish.
Xtreme: What’s your favorite role playing scenario?
jessica: It depends on my mood. If it’s for a movie, and I have access to more locations and more people, I like to infiltrate places that are considered “men only” and to just be ravaged by every man in the place. I’m hoping to do a scene pretty soon in a men’s club, like a cigar bar or something like that. I’ve done a scene in an elevator with a bunch of guys. That’s what I really like about Wicked, that I’ve always been able to tell them, “This has always been a fantasy of mine.”
Xtreme: In your personal life, are you ever with more than one guy at a time?
jessica: It’s only happened once because that’s sort of a tricky phone call to make. In a swingers’ club situation it’s a lot easier, but I’m always so safe-sex conscious that I can never lose myself to the situation because I’m always thinking, “Who is this person? Are they tested? What are we doing?” I have too much at stake to really do that in any type of anonymous situation, nor really would I.
Xtreme: How many guys have you been with in a scene?
jessica: Um, three, and I think that was my maximum. Let me tell you, that was a big undertaking. In theory it was a great idea, but about halfway through the scene I just wanted a nap and a sandwich. [laughs] Although I’ve been in orgies and had sex with every guy on set, and certainly that was more than three.
Xtreme: You’ve been double penetrated, right?
jessica: Oh, yeah, and to me that’s the point of an orgy. Like, everybody knows that when Wicked does an orgy, there’s about to be a DP and I’m gonna be the one in the middle. I definitely enjoy DPs and I want to incorporate them into one of my instructionals down the line.
Xtreme: One more big thing that’s happened to you in recent years is that you’ve been inducted into more than one Hall of Fame, which is well deserved. You’ve performed, and very well at that, you’ve directed, and you’re a living legend. What are your goals at this point?
jessica: I can totally do better! I challenge myself every year, and just when I wonder how I can top the last year, there’s always another opportunity. I think I’m really going to concentrate on the instructionals, and of course I’m going to keep performing, and I want to direct some big features this year. I’ve really just gotten to a point where I can choose what I want to be involved with. The industry changes very quickly these days, so a few years down the line, I guess we’ll see!
